Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the interstitial space that is due to an insufficiency of the lymphatic system which causes excessive swelling. Basically, it’s swelling caused by a blockage of the normal lymph flow or damage to the lymph nodes and/or vessels. The protein-rich fluid becomes trapped and swelling results. This swelling typically occurs mostly in the arms and legs but can also occur elsewhere in the body such as the face, neck, trunk, and genitals. Cancer patients who have had lymph nodes removed and/or had radiation treatments are at a higher risk of developing Lymphedema. But, cancer patients aren’t the only ones who can develop it. It can be hereditary (Primary Lymphedema) or it can occur after a surgical procedure, infection, chronic venous insufficiency, Lipedema or other physical trauma (Secondary Lymphedema).
